CHILDREN'S CENTRE COMMITTEE

 

The Children's Centre Committee of the University Women's Association is made up of women who bring varied professional and academic expertise and their talents and interests to this voluntary service. Among them are academics, librarians, educators, and medical personnel.

 

 

Prof. Virginia (Jill) Dike – Chair since 2002; chair of the library committee from 1978-2002; Secretary of the Children's Centre Committee, 1985-1992; university lecturer in library and information science (specializing in children's literature and school librarianship). Member of the library, prison library and schools outreach sub- committees; member of the equipment and playground development committees; financial secretary of UWA, 1976-79; treasurer, 1993-97. Initiator and coordinator of the library as a teaching laboratory for library and information science and base for outreach programs. E-mail: vwdike@yahoo.com .

 
 

Prof. Wilhelmina (Willi) Kalu – Immediate Past Chair , serving from the committee's inception in 1980 to 1996, and from 1999 to 2001, when she moved to the United States; chair of the original playground committee (1978-1980); initiator of the Motherless Babies Project; secretary of UWA, 1977-79 and president, 2001-2002. An educational psychologist and special educator in the Department of Educational Foundations, she founded the Psycho-Educational Testing Services (PETS) as a component of the Children's Centre in 2000 and continues to participate in its development. Ms. Terri Emezi - Vice-Chair ; foundation committee member; former vice- president of UWA. University lecturer in social sciences, formerly a deputy registrar in the careers office and teacher in the staff primary school; chair of UWA finance committee; member of the library sub-committee; member of the playground development committee; special interest in services to the handicapped. Mrs. Ngozi Osadebe - Secretary ; librarian in the university library, formerly with British Council, Enugu. Member of the library and prison library sub- committees; member of the landscaping and playground development committees; active in organizing children's programs and library work; served as coordinator of the British Council/LIASSO children's forum; crusader in Help for AIDS Orphans. Mrs. Fidelia Asiegbu - Assistant Secretary ; librarian in the university library, formerly teacher in staff primary school; member of the library sub-committee; member of Psycho-Educational Testing Services committee; member of UWA finance committee; member of equipment and landscaping development committees; active in organizing vacation programs, excursions, and story hour; caroling coordinator.

 

 
  Dr. Nkadi Onyegegbu - Treasurer; university lecturer in science education; committee member since the 1980s; member of UWA Finance Committee; member of equipment development committee; active in research and NGOs concerned with reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and sex education; active in motherless babies project and youth forum; caroling coordinator.
Dr. Uche Agwagah – Member; university lecturer in mathematics education; president of the University Women's Association from 1997-2001; as president, initiated UWA programs with university students and the prison outreach.  
  Dr. Josephine Nkiru-Edna Alumanah - Member and former secretary; university lecturer in sociology and anthropology; member of equipment development committee; active in children's programs, youth forum, and the motherless babies project; caroling coordinator. E-mail: joalumanah@yahoo.com .
Dr. Ogo Amucheazi - Foundation library committee member; university librarian and part-time lecturer in library and information science; researcher in oral information and information literacy; active in outreach to schools.  
  Dr. Grace Anyanwu – Member since the 1980s; served as committee secretary; former vice-president of UWA. University lecturer in home science and child and family studies, with specialization in child development; member of UWA finance committee; chair of playground development committee; member of the Psycho-Educational Testing Services committee (specializing in reading development) and prison library sub-committee; active in creative arts, puppetry, cookery and youth forum.
Mrs. Elizabeth Babarinde – Member; National Youth Service Corps member posted to the Children's Centre in 2006, who has since then joined the committee as a staff wife; masters student in library and information science; active in vacation programs.  
  Mrs. Susan Echa – Member; Headmistress of the University School (Primary); has participated in setting up cooperative programs between the school and Children's Centre.
Mrs. Ifeoma Echezona – Member; librarian in the university library; convener of the building renovation sub-committee; member of landscaping development committee; member of the library sub-committee; caroling coordinator.  
 

Helen Nneka Eke – Assistant Librarian in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library; Masters Student in Library and Information Science; NIA graduate and Peer Educator Trainer on HIV and AIDS issues; involved in vacation programmes (dance, singing, computer) and the Virtual Water Summit. heleneke_eke@yahoo.com

Mrs. Ngozi Justina Ekere – Member; librarian with the university library; member of the library and schools outreach sub-committees; UWA representative on the university staff school board.  
 

Dr. Chinwe Ezeani - Member; deputy university librarian, formerly with British Council, Enugu; part-time lecturer in library and information science; member of the library sub-committee; member of equipment development committee; coordinator of vacation program, active in story hour and other library activities; caroling coordinator. Dr. Ify Ezeorah – Member; Lecturer in foreign languages and literatures; has participated in story hour programs.
